Hwange National Park

Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe’s largest and most celebrated safari destination, offering an authentic African wilderness experience across more than 14,600 square kilometres of diverse landscapes. Located in the northwest of the country, just a short distance from Victoria Falls, Hwange is renowned for its vast elephant herds, rich biodiversity, and exceptional year-round game viewing.

Hwange is home to one of Africa’s largest elephant populations, with herds often seen gathering at the park’s famous waterholes. Alongside these gentle giants, visitors can encounter lion, leopard, cheetah, buffalo, and the rare African wild dog. Over 400 bird species make this a rewarding destination for birding enthusiasts.

Exceptional Game Viewing

What sets Hwange apart is its network of pumped waterholes, which attract wildlife throughout the dry season. This creates remarkable opportunities for close-up sightings, whether on a guided game drive or from a specially designed underground hide.

Visitors to Hwange can enjoy a range of immersive safari activities, including:

  • Morning and afternoon game drives
  • Night drives for nocturnal wildlife encounters
  • Guided walking safaris with experienced trackers
  • Hide-based viewing for photography and quiet observation

When to Visit

Hwange offers rewarding experiences throughout the year:

  • Dry Season (May to October): Peak wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources
  • Green Season (November to April): Lush scenery, excellent birdlife, and fewer visitors

Getting There

Hwange National Park is easily accessible via Victoria Falls. Visitors can fly into Victoria Falls Airport and transfer by road or light aircraft directly to camps within the park.
