Luengue-Luiana National Park, Angola
Luengue-Luiana National Park is one of Africa’s largest and most remote wilderness areas, located in the southeastern corner of Angola. Covering vast floodplains, rivers, and open savannah, the park forms part of the renowned Kavango–Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA), one of the biggest conservation regions in the world.
This is a a new chapter for KAZA TFCA. In 2025, the Angolan Ministry of Environment and Tourism officially approved the Luiana Plains Safaris project, green-lighting an ambitious conservation-led initiative aimed at opening the Luengue-Luiana National Park to sustainable international travel.
The Park was proclaimed in 2011 and falls within the Kavango Zambezi (KAZA) Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA). It’s the largest among the parks of KAZA.
It is a wilderness reborn. Luiana Plains Explorers Camp is situated within the Luengue-Luiana National Park area know as the Luiana Core area, East of Jamba and just South of the Luiana River.
Wildlife & Conservation
The wildlife in the Luiana Plains is in a state of “mass return” following years of recovery. The area is becoming a stronghold for large herds of elephant and Cape buffalo, alongside predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah, and African wild dog.
The region is also noted for speciality antelope, including the rare Sable, Roan, Lechwe, and Eland. The Park has four habitats: open woodland, dense woodland, open grassland and aquatic vegetation offering an exceptional birding experience.
A True Expedition Experience
Unlike more commercial safari destinations, visiting Luengue-Luiana is about adventure. Access can be challenging, and tourism infrastructure is still limited, making it ideal for experienced travellers seeking something wild, remote, and authentic.
Landscape & Scenery
The park offers a vast, raw wilderness characterised by mopane and miombo savannah, wide floodplains, and isolated ridges. A defining feature of the region is the spectacular Cuando (Kwando) riverine and floodplain area. Here, the Cuando, Luiana, and Luengue rivers weave through the terrain, creating lush, life-sustaining green corridors and vast floodplains that contrast dramatically with the surrounding sandy landscape.
