Gorongosa National Park

A apreserved area in the Great Rift Valley of central Mozambique

With over 25 years of experience, we have built a reputation as a trusted partner for authentic, life-changing journeys across the African continent.

Gorongosa National Park

Its forests and savannahs are home to lions, hippos and elephants. Lake Urema and its surrounding wetlands and rivers attract scores of water birds. The multitiered Murombodzi Falls spills over jagged rocks on the slopes of Mount Gorongosa. Limestone gorges and bat-filled caves define Cheringoma Plateau.

After being devastated during the Mozambican Civil War, the park has undergone massive ecological restoration and is now renowned for wildlife recovery, community conservation, and wilderness experiences.

Why it’s special

  • Strong conservation focus with successful rewilding programs
  • Diverse ecosystems: floodplains, savannah, forests, rivers, and Mount Gorongosa rainforest
  • Excellent birding with over 500 bird species
  • Fewer crowds than many Southern African safari destinations
  • Authentic safari atmosphere with strong cultural and community involvement

Best time to visit

  • Dry season (May–October): Best for game viewing, cooler weather, easier road access
  • Green season (November–April): Lush landscapes, dramatic scenery, excellent birding, but some roads/lodges may close during heavy rains
