Overview

An authentic, back-to-basics safari on the wild shores of Lake Kariba

Set on the edge of Lake Kariba within Matusadona National Park, Rhino Safari Camp offers a refreshingly raw and intimate safari experience. This is not a lodge defined by luxury finishes or modern excess, but rather by exceptional guiding, genuine Zimbabwean hospitality, and a deep connection to the wilderness.

Its unique setting adds to the sense of adventure. Depending on water levels, the camp transforms with the landscape — at times connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land allowing wildlife to roam freely, and at others isolated by a channel of water. It’s this ever-changing geography, paired with a stripped-back approach, that makes Rhino Safari Camp feel like a rare and authentic safari relic.

Accommodation

Accommodation at Rhino Safari Camp is intentionally simple and immersive. Seven solar-powered reed-and-thatch chalets, accommodating a maximum of fourteen guests, are raised on platforms overlooking the lake.

Designed to bring you closer to nature, the chalets are largely open to the elements, with roll-down reed blinds providing privacy and mosquito nets carefully prepared each evening. Ensuite bathrooms are located on the ground level and accessed via stairs, featuring flush toilets, open-air hot showers, and stone basins.

Despite the camp’s rustic ethos, thoughtful touches ensure comfort, including lighting, charging points, and even high-speed Wi-Fi — a subtle nod to modern convenience in an otherwise unplugged setting.

Activities

  • Walking safaris are a highlight, offering the rare opportunity to approach wildlife such as elephants and lions on foot, guided by highly skilled professionals.
  • On the water, boat safaris reveal a different perspective of the landscape, rich in birdlife and game along the shoreline.
  • Fishing on Lake Kariba
