What to Expect
Set on its own private island on the vast waters of Lake Kariba, Musango Safari Camp offers a refreshingly different safari experience. Positioned near the wild shores of Matusadona National Park in northern Zimbabwe, this intimate camp combines exceptional guiding with the tranquility of life on the water.
Lake Kariba — one of the world’s largest man-made lakes — is rich in wildlife and birdlife. Its waters are home to hippos and legendary tiger fish, while elephants and other game frequently gather along its shoreline. Unlike traditional land-based safaris, much of the experience here unfolds by boat, offering a smooth, immersive, and photographer-friendly way to explore. Guided walks and game drives in the nearby national park are also available, though less frequent.
At the heart of Musango lies a charming, double-storey thatched lodge reminiscent of a Swiss Family Robinson retreat. The lower level features a welcoming lounge, reception area, and a dining space centred around a distinctive crescent-shaped table — the setting for lively, communal dinners.
Upstairs, an open-sided deck provides sweeping views across the lake. This is where leisurely breakfasts and brunches are served, and where guests can unwind in comfortable seating, soaking in the peaceful surroundings. Below, a small swimming pool, shaded patio, and hammock create inviting spaces to relax between activities.
Highlights
Musango offers six understated yet characterful chalets, constructed from a blend of thatch, stone, and canvas. Each is thoughtfully spaced for privacy and connected to the main lodge by winding gravel paths.
For those seeking a little extra indulgence, two stone-built honeymoon suites provide additional space and feature private plunge pools overlooking the lake.
All chalets accommodate two guests and include en-suite bathrooms with partially open-air stone showers. Each room enjoys tranquil, east-facing views — perfect for sunrise moments over the water. While interiors are simple and can feel warm during hotter months, shaded outdoor seating areas offer a cool and relaxing escape.
Life at Musango moves at a gentle pace — you can be as active or as relaxed as you choose. Days typically revolve around morning and afternoon activities, guided by expert knowledge and seasonal conditions.
Boat safaris are a highlight, bringing you close to hippos, elephants, and a wide variety of wildlife that gather at the water’s edge. Fishing is another favourite, whether you’re a seasoned angler or trying it for the first time.
For a deeper connection to the landscape, guided walks reveal the intricate relationships between the region’s flora, fauna, and geology. Musango also played a key role in the reintroduction of black rhino to Matusadona, and when conditions allow, guests may experience the rare opportunity of tracking these animals on foot.
Each day is shaped by the insight of your guide — ensuring a safari that feels personal, authentic, and deeply connected to the rhythm of the wild.
