What to Expect
A shaded camp hide allows safe observation of animals drinking at the nearby waterhole, or at the dam further away. The swimming pool with a view out over the bush and a waterhole provides a relaxing spot for cooling off on warm days. Décor throughout the lodge is inspired by the film Out of Africa, based on Karen Blixen’s autobiography, starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep.
Highlights
The large safari tents are a short walk from the main building at the end of clearly marked paths. The tents are under a thatched roof, protecting them from falling leaves and making them cooler in summer. The roof extends over a small private patio with table and chairs. The tents have mosquito windows with flaps which can be opened or closed according to the weather. Each tent has an en-suite shower and flush toilet. There is electricity in the tents and air-conditioning. As the tents are on the outskirts of the camp you will have a full uninterrupted view of the bush from your patio. One of the tents is large enough to accommodate a family of 4 or 5. The camp is unfenced and animals roam freely, sometimes in the camp and around the tents. You will be safe inside the tents but after dark you will be accompanied to your tent.
Chalet
The chalet is close to the main buildings and has air-conditioning, shower, toilet, mosquito nets over the bed and a small private patio with table and chairs.
Game drives are in our open 4×4 game drive vehicle driven by one of our rangers who is assisted by a tracker.
Their mission is to locate and show you the many animals, reptiles and birds that live out in the bush and to inform you about them as well as the habitat in which they live. Of course the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo – always seem to top the list but you will get to appreciate many other creatures too.
KwaMbili offers two game drives of about three hours a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The morning game drive leaves around Sunrise and returns in time for breakfast. The afternoon game drive leaves in the late afternoon and returns after sunset, in time for dinner.
These are our after-breakfast walks on the wild side. For those who wish to experience the bush, not just observe it, there is no better guided excursion. You are dropped in the thick of things and all five senses engage. Feel the scrub crunch beneath your feet, touch a velvety acacia seed pod, hear the crack of a branch indicating you are not alone, and spot the game appear just metres off – exhilarating! This is also a wonderful opportunity to encounter the smaller creatures, often missed on safari vehicles, and to discover more about the reserve’s plants – many with fascinating medicinal properties and traditional uses.
From boma feasts to safari refreshment stops, dining promises to be a highlight – for all our guests, with any dietary requirement, including kosher, catered for. Our chefs transform local recipes into contemporary dishes, giving you a taste for Southern Africa. Paired with premium wines from the Cape, dining becomes an experience. Our wine tastings are also a favourite of connoisseurs and dabblers, alike.
