What to Expect
Private, slow safari living on the vast waters of Lake Kariba
Set sail on one of Africa’s most unique safari experiences aboard the Matusadona Luxury Safari Cruiser — a sleek, intimate vessel designed for those who prefer wilderness on their own terms. Accommodating just seven guests, this private yacht glides effortlessly across the shimmering expanse of Lake Kariba, offering front-row access to one of southern Africa’s most wildlife-rich environments.
This enormous inland sea — spanning over 5,400 square kilometres — is a magnet for life. Hippos wallow in the shallows, fish eagles call overhead, and along the banks, elephants, antelope, and even lion come down to drink. Each day brings a new perspective, as your captain anchors in a different remote location, ensuring an ever-changing backdrop to your safari.
Life onboard centres around the spacious upper deck — an open-plan haven where days unfold at an unhurried pace. Here you’ll find the dining area, bar, lounge, and a standout feature: an outdoor Jacuzzi with uninterrupted lake views. It’s the perfect setting for long, lazy lunches, wildlife watching, or sundowners as the sky shifts from gold to deep indigo.
Below, the middle deck offers additional comfort and versatility, with an indoor dining space, lounge and entertainment area, small library, and a shaded outdoor breakfast spot — ideal for escaping the midday heat or cooler evenings.
Highlights
The lower deck houses four well-appointed cabins, positioned at water level for an immersive connection to the lake. Three double cabins and one single cabin comfortably accommodate up to seven guests.
Each cabin features:
- Queen-sized beds
- En-suite bathrooms with showers
- Elegant hardwood finishes
- Egyptian cotton linens and handcrafted furnishings
The atmosphere is understated and relaxed — more boutique retreat than traditional safari camp.
While the cruiser itself is the experience, a range of activities brings you even closer to the wild:
- Game viewing by boat – Watch elephants wade and bathe along the shoreline
- Pontoon excursions – Venture out for closer wildlife encounters
- Fishing trips – Try your hand at catching Kariba’s famous tiger fish
- Canoeing & guided walks – Explore select areas from a different perspective
- Onboard relaxation – Sunrise coffee, lazy afternoons, and unforgettable sundowners
