Guides from the local tribes compliment day-time game drives to track mountain zebra, kudu, springbok, klipspringer and if you are fortunate enough… the leopard! The adventurer in me took over at Mowani. Days were filled with game drives, hot air balloon trips over the Aba-Huab Valley, champagne breakfasts and al fresco meals amidst the dusky landscape beneath Mopani trees.

Mushara Lodge | Etosha East

Located just 8 km from the Von Lindequist Gate on the eastern boundary of Etosha National Park, Mushara Lodge is an ideal overnight stop for visitors to the game reserve. The lodge consists of ten spacious chalets, one family unit, a triple room and two single rooms. The name Mushara is derived from the Purple Pod Terminalia tree which grows abundantly on the lodge grounds and in the surroundings. The thatched public area includes a small library with a selection of good books, a bar with an extensive wine cellar, an airy lounge complete with welcoming fireplace for winter evenings, a dining area and a well stocked curio shop.

Situated in a fairy-tale valley of the Waterberg: Huge trees, mighty bamboo and a spring turn the farmhouse-style lodge into an oasis at the edge of the Kalahari. There are two pools, a garden café and a restaurant & bar. European dishes from the typically Namibian farmhouse kitchen are served for dinner (set menu).

The lodge is part of the private nature reserve Waterberg Wilderness, offering a world of experience at the Kalahari’s table mountain:
Guests can join guided hikes onto the plateau (8:00) or enjoy an exclusive guided hike just for themselves (“honeymoon sundowners”, 16:00). Rhino drives (16:00) and Rhino tracking tours (8:00) offer the opportunity to encounter rhinos and other game at eye-level. There are cultural tours to Hereroland (8:00), not to forget five nature trails including a “Botanical garden” and a History Path with information boards reviving and explaining the past.

Okonjima Plains Camp is within the secluded wilderness area of Okonjima Nature Reserve and has majestic sunset views. Its design honours the Hanssen’s family cattle-farming history with its accommodation facility of 11 large View Rooms and 14 spacious Classic Rooms. The Plains Camp Barn includes a dining and lounge area, a curio shop and a terrasse with views over a waterhole and the Okonjima plains.

Game drives in search of elusive leopards and guided bush walks offer visitors an intimate, up-close perspective of Namibia’s wildlife and, especially, its most protected species. Whether you hike or are an avid bird watcher, there are endless ways to spend your time at Okonjima.
